How to attach a towable man lift to a towing vehicle?

Dec 15, 2025

Hey there! As a supplier of towable man lifts, I often get asked about how to attach these nifty machines to a towing vehicle. It's not rocket science, but there are some key steps and considerations to make sure you do it safely and correctly. So, let's dive right in and go through the process together.

Step 1: Check Compatibility

First things first, you've got to make sure your towable man lift and towing vehicle are a good match. The vehicle needs to have the right towing capacity to handle the weight of the lift. You can find the towing capacity in your vehicle's owner's manual. Also, check the type of hitch on your vehicle. Most towable man lifts use a standard ball hitch, but some might require a different type.

For example, if you're looking at a Tow Behind Spider Lift, it has specific weight and hitch requirements. Make sure your vehicle can handle it before you go any further.

Step 2: Gather the Necessary Tools

You'll need a few tools to get the attachment done. These include a socket wrench set, which you'll use to tighten the bolts and nuts. A leveling tool is also important to make sure the lift is sitting straight on the towing vehicle. And don't forget a safety chain. This is a crucial safety measure in case the lift becomes detached from the vehicle while you're on the road.

Step 3: Prepare the Towable Man Lift

Before you start attaching the lift to the vehicle, you need to prepare the lift itself. Check the tire pressure and make sure the wheels are in good condition. You don't want to get halfway down the road and have a flat tire. Also, lower the outriggers if your lift has them. These are the legs that provide stability when the lift is in use. You'll need to lower them to the ground and make sure they're properly extended.

Step 4: Position the Towing Vehicle

Back your towing vehicle up to the towable man lift slowly and carefully. Make sure the vehicle is in a straight line with the lift. Use a spotter if possible to help you with the backing up process. Once the vehicle is in position, put it in park and set the parking brake. You don't want the vehicle to move while you're attaching the lift.

Step 5: Attach the Hitch

Now it's time to attach the lift to the vehicle. Align the hitch on the lift with the ball hitch on the vehicle. Lower the lift onto the ball hitch and make sure it's securely connected. Use a socket wrench to tighten the locking pin or clamp that holds the lift in place. Give the lift a little shake to make sure it's not going to come off easily.

Step 6: Connect the Safety Chain

As I mentioned earlier, the safety chain is a must. Connect the safety chain from the towable man lift to the towing vehicle. Make sure the chain is long enough to allow the vehicle to turn, but not so long that it drags on the ground. Cross the chain under the hitch to prevent it from touching the ground and to provide additional support in case the lift becomes detached.

Step 7: Check the Lights

Most towable man lifts come with their own set of lights, including brake lights, turn signals, and running lights. You need to connect these lights to the vehicle's electrical system. You can use a light adapter kit to make the connection. Once the lights are connected, test them to make sure they're working properly. Have someone stand behind the vehicle and operate the lights while you check to see if they're functioning.

Step 8: Final Checks

Before you hit the road, do a final inspection of the attachment. Check all the bolts and nuts to make sure they're tight. Make sure the safety chain is properly connected and the lights are working. Also, check the towing vehicle's mirrors to make sure you have a clear view of the lift behind you.
